Ann, I lived on Whidbey Island, where Lolita and several other Orcas were captured over 40 years ago. Many whales were killed during the course of the brutal roundup. I was not living there at the time, but anyone who lives on Whidbey and enjoys the sight of Orcas and other types of whales swimming off shore, sooner or later becomes aware of this horrendous incident. Way back when, few of us realized how awful zoos and aquariums and circuses were, or the impact these traumatic practices had on the animals. But we do now, and with awareness comes responsibility. It is time to stop treating animals as things and way past time to right some egregious wrongs that have been committed over the years (and sadly, are Still being committed) against animals.
