Annotations to Maggie’s Civil War Journal, January 1865: The family continues to suffer under the weight of the Yankee army and the Federal control of Nashville. Maggie is visiting friends within the city. Her statement concerning “mud” gives us a vivid description of Nashville streets. Pa’s (Joseph Vaulx ) job of recovering lost possessions is almost fruit less. From General George Thomas to the lone Yankee picket, “they are all rascals.” Wednesday, January 4th 1865. Up early. Ellen and I paid a visit to Ellen Fall and Aunt Sallie. Very pleasant out yet the mud is almost intolerable. Pa is still trying to gather up the fragments, but his efforts meet with little success. O! the vileness that exists in this army. They are all rascals from the highest to the lowest! Pictured: (1) Maggie Vaulx (2) Joseph Vaulx (3) journal entry Go to rosshudgins for information
