Announcing Roosevelt’s New Principal Filip Hristic July 2014 Dear Roosevelt Community, I am pleased to announce that Filip Hristic, principal at Creative Science School K-8 , is Roosevelt High School’s new principal. He succeeds Charlene Williams, who is now senior director of the Roosevelt Cluster and Benson High School. As a teacher and administrator for the past 15 years, Mr. Hristic (pronounced h-REESH-tich) brings a wealth of experience to Roosevelt. Before joining Portland Public Schools, he served as one of four principals at Newberg High School under its small school model. While an administrator there, Hristic helped reduce the number of students leaving high school early, increased dual credit offerings and the numbers of students taking Advanced Placement courses. (Newberg High also met the Adequate Yearly Progress benchmark under the federal No Child Left Behind for the first time in the school’s history under Mr. Hristic’s leadership.) Mr. Hristic, born and raised in Belgrade, Serbia (in the former Yugoslavia), he came to the U.S. as a seventh grader and learned English as a second language. Fluent in Serbian, Croatian and Bosnian, he understands from personal experience and has developed a proven track record of eliminating the barriers that schools can create for students of diverse cultures and backgrounds. Mr. Hristic believes that a school works best when it has a shared vision and common sense of purpose. Throughout his administrative career, he has created school cultures where students are challenged and supported to engage in meaningful and rigorous work, where parents and community members engage as vital partners and staff is supported as individuals and team members. Mr. Hristic said he is honored to join the Roosevelt community, humbled by the great work of its teachers, administrators, staff and students and looks forward to guiding the school as it is modernized through the PPS School Building Improvement Bond. Families and staff are invited to meet Mr. Hristic at a reception Wednesday, July 23 from 6 pm to 7 pm in the Roosevelt Library as part of the school’s Summer Nights Celebration. Please join me in welcoming Mr. Hristic and in thanking Principal Williams for her outstanding service to Roosevelt High School.
