Announcing the new JENNY PHILLIPS SUMMER READING PROGRAM! Read books that are virtuous, lovely, of good report, and praiseworthy, and earn rewards such as CDs and books. Forty-two years ago, this statement was made in General Conference: “Many of the recommended reading lists of our public schools would have been classified as unacceptable less than a generation ago . . . Perhaps we should all become a lot more interested in what the school is recommending and making available to our children. A few years ago, I did become much more interested in what my children were reading, and I was startled to find the amount of disrespectful behavior, unclean language, and negative portrayal of parents, family, teachers, and education in popular books for youth. Tragically, many youth today are partaking of a steady diet of easy, quick-read books all about self-centered adventure and thrill with low literary and moral value. I believe that as parents, one of the most important missions we have on this earth is the molding and shaping of our children’s minds and characters, and as Elder Joe J. Christensen said, “What we choose to read will make a huge difference in the development of our mind and character.” Having a degree in English, a love for good literature, and a passion for raising my children in righteousness and strengthening the youth, for the past three years, I have spent hundreds of hours scouring and evaluating books to create a Summer Reading Program ( that not only guides your children to completely clean, inspiring, and well-written books reflective of the 13th article of faith: virtuous, lovely, of good report, and praiseworthy” but will also motivate your children with the opportunity to earn rewards: jennyphillips/products/summer_reading/summer-reading-program
