Annoyed with budget cuts to the CSIRO resulting in the shut down of Bowel Cancer research - why not email the Minister for Health using our pre-written note: To: [email protected] Subject: CSIRO Funding – Bowel Cancer The Hon Peter Dutton MP Federal Minister for Health It is with great alarm that I read that budget cuts to the CSIRO will result in a shut down to research into bowel cancer. Bowel Cancer is the second biggest cancer killer in Australia, however does not currently receive funding equal to the burden of the disease. Minister I was delighted to learn that the Government made $96 million available in the federal budget to ensure free bowel cancer screening was available to all Australians aged 50 to 74 every two years, however I struggle to comprehend your Governments planned cuts to the CSIRO. As a Minister for Health without formal training in medicine, allow me to help educate you in the facts of bowel cancer in our country: 1. Australia has one of the highest rates of bowel cancer in the world; 2. More than 15,000 people are diagnosed with bowel cancer each year; 3. Bowel cancer is the second most common cause of cancer-related death in Australia, after lung cancer; 4. If detected early, up to 90% of bowel cancers can be successfully treated; 5. Fewer than 40% of bowel cancers are detected at an early stage These facts are undeniable – screening is simply not enough to prevent bowel cancer in Australia! Stripping $115 millions dollars from CSIRO funding in the latest federal budget forces a 20 percent reduction of staff between June 2013 and June 2015. Clearly your Government supports and places a huge emphasis on screening, however this is at odds with your Governments stance on research at the CSIRO. Can you please help me to understand what evidence the Government holds, which suggests increased funding for screening, whilst removing funding into research leads to better outcomes for the health of Australians? I thank you in advance for your consideration and await your prompt reply. [Please insert your name here]
