Annoying Calls The phone calls that come through even when our number is unlisted, on the “no-call” list, and the blocked list is astounding. When asked how they found this number, we get the song and dance of it was the next number on the list. With this answered, they proceed to read their script not allowing us to interject an objection to this call. When the objections are voiced, the caller talks faster and louder as if this was going to make us listen, but they know what was coming next. In one of my previous jobs, I was selling … (brace yourself) … “cheap” life insurance. One night a week was set up as phone night. That night every sales person gathered in the conference room, which was set up with the banquet tables and four to five phones on each table. We started calling at 6 PM to set up appointments, so I have experience in hang-ups, vial language, rude and violent questions, threats of personal bodily harm, etc. All the while, I was required to run through the script, undaunted. The appointment was the objective, which was not an easy task. I was competing with dinner, Wheel of Fortune, American Idol, NCIS, etc. This may be one reason I didn’t last. If you filled out a questionnaire, returned a card for something, placed your phone number on an application of some type, or anything that may have seemed innocent, the fine print states this in now public domain and will allow callers to contact you. When these calls come through, I take a couple of actions. First, check the caller ID, and if I do not recognize the number, I let it go to voice mail. If it was important, they will leave a message or not, in either case, it is easy to block that number. If I do answer the call by accident, I politely try to terminate the call. If the caller become obnoxious, is when my Italian/Swedish temper surfaces. Through all of this, the one thing to keep in mind, some callers have feelings like me. If we have to talk to them, we should try to be polite in excusing ourselves. If they persist, we should take note of the number, hang up, and block it. We gave them a chance to be nice, too. Was I good at that job? NO! Did I last long? NO! Did I meet some great people? YES! Those three months were an experience but worth it.
