Anon asks Advice needed regarding mastitis / breast feeding pain! It all started back in early June when I had a sudden drop in milk supply due to my thyroid levels needing adjustment. Since then to varying degrees Ive had pain feeding, frequent blocked ducts and now 2-3 mastitis episodes. Always on the same side. I finished my second course of Keflex antibiotics on Sunday (longer 10 day course) for mastitis the first was only a couple of weeks before and I had a blocked duct / start of mastitis feelings end of June too. Now only 2 days later I started having symptoms again, theyre vaguely under control through feeding and expressing as much as I can bear but its so painful! I use nipple cream, massage, heat and cool packs which have all given some relief. I love breastfeeding my 7 month old baby and due to allergies this is the only milk she can tolerate, but it is excruciating pain at times & I know shes aware Im uncomfortable as shes not so relaxed feeding that side. I cant keep taking antibiotics, I have gut problems made worse by them & Ive reacted to many types in the past. I dont know what to do?! I just want to feed without pain. Ive had nurses & midwives check shes latching on properly, no signs of tongue tied and shes fine on the other side. Ive noticed shes never fed as much from that side and when she was newborn that side was also where I had problems with pain and a very sore nipple (bleeding etc I ended up using shields till it healed up). There seems to be plenty of supply though it doesnt seem to be a fast supply more a steady trickle (from observing the way it pumps when I express). Otherwise I love breastfeeding its been an amazing experience Im just fed up with it being so painful.
