Anon asks Hello there, My son, 16 months old, had an extreme crying episode yesterday. He woke after only 1 hour from his day time nap. In the last couple of weeks he has recently transitioned to 1 nap (still 2 naps on some days but mostly now just 1 and he has seemed very comfortable with this, it has not been forced and he seems generally happy). However yesterday, he woke up crying. I went to him and picked him up to sooth him and he seemed like he wanted to get away from me and seemed quite unsure of what he wanted, I just held him and tried not to force anything on him and stayed calm, but he got more and more upset. Eventually he was hysterical and he was totally inconsolable. He has cried like this a handful of times before (not after waking up specifically) but this has been when I havent been around.. Whenever he is upset with me, I have always been able to calm him down within minutes. But not this time, neither myself or his dad could calm him down and he screamed and cried for about 20 mins solid. I was so convinced something was medically wrong with him, we got in the car to go to the doctor, but he calmed down on the way and seemed fine again and has been fine ever since. I will mention he has had some constipation and has been crampy, I honestly thought it was this as every now and then he would make crampy noises and then scream, and then cry and cry - I have no idea if this is related or if its just coincidence, or if he had some kind of sleep terror as he calmed in the car. I am really concerned, it was awful to see him so distressed and not be able to do anything about it. He didnt even want to nurse and thats unusual for him. Thx so much 😊 x
