Anonymous Question: I have joint hypermobility and a very unstable spine which has caused lordosis of the spine now causing disc and nerve pain as well as joint pain. Im now waiting for an appointment with back surgeon to look at fusing my spine. Has anyone with hypermobility has this or similar problems and has it helped relieve some pain? Im obviously worried and scared but I have hardly any enjoyment now. I need some advice. HMSA Answer: Fusion of joints in individuals with a hypermobility syndrome is usually a last resort due to potential issues with poor healing, and it can also put strain on the surrounding joints and cause more long-term pain and issues. However, there are times when it may be appropriate and can be very effective. It is therefore important to make sure your surgeon is very aware of your condition and its effects. Before surgery is considered, pain management, pacing and specific physiotherapy is usually recommended. The important thing with physiotherapy is that it needs to be done with a good understanding of hypermobility syndromes, so if you havent yet seen a physiotherapist who specialises in hypermobility then that might be something to consider before surgery. There is a useful article on phsyiotherapy linked from this page hypermobility.org/help-advice/physio-and-occupational-therapy/.
