Anonymous in Kansas shares, sorry it is lengthy but important: I have a four year old Autistic Daughter who is very high on the spectrum. She is unable to talk, has constant meltdowns, etc. She has four diagnoses, autistic disorder, self injurious behavior, ect. I moved to a school district that offers what I thought was a WONDERFUL autism program for even children her age. (5 days a week full school day and summer school bc she is so severe) She has now been attending for well over a year. The school has now reported to to the state for the SECOND time which is disturbing me greatly. The first time they reported me for things like her hair not being brushed (which we had discussed she has a complete meltdown), her being hungry when she gets to school, staph infections (went to the Doctor every time, said she is prone to it), and arriving at school in wet diapers (she rides the bus 45 minutes before she gets to school so she is obviously wetting herself on the bus). After the first time I let it slide. The claim was immediately unsubstantiated by the state. I figured they just did not quite understand and immediately requested a meeting with her teacher where we decided that they would (again they had already said they would do this) help her with her hair, they admitted she was wetting through diapers at school, I would send extra food to school for her, etc. So I followed everything they asked me to do and now I am being reported for a SECOND time. I am frustrated because I am caring for her and trying to meet her EVERY need. I do work full time and have another child. I feel like the school does not understand the severity of how she acts outside of a totally structured environment and am appalled at their lack of contacting me (never attempted the first of the second time) to discuss any issues with my child. She appears to be the lowest functioning child in their classroom and I am beginning to think they do not understand how severe she is outside of a school room. I need some advice on how to handle this. I have reached out to them every time I need advice (i.e.she hurts herself, she is not following direction, communication issues, etc) and have followed their advice and then they turn around and report me for their lack of follow through on what they say they will help with and my utilizing their advice and it not working. I am being reported/punished due to my daughters severity and her lack of development and I do not know what to do??? I cannot pull her (she does benefit from going) but I am scared they are going to keep doing this and it is absolutely without reason.
