Anoraks Corner .. Gloucestershires legendary railway photographer, Ben Ashworth, must have peddled his trike like the clappers from Queens Road Bridge to St Georges Road Bridge to capture the same locomotive, hauling the same train, on the same day, Saturday 10th July 1965! ..Yesterday, I posted a picture of the summer, Saturdays Only service, the 11.22 from Newquay to Wolverhampton, passing the grassy embankment which separated the Western and Midland routes to the north after crossing Lansdown Junction and passing beneath Lansdown Road Bridge. .And its back today! ..The locomotive is former LMS 4-6-0 Black 5 #45006. .Looking south from the bridge on St Georges Road, the train is gaining speed having just departed from Malvern Road Station.. The carriages towards the rear are still passing Christchurch School and in the left foreground, the two tracks leading to St James Station and goods yard can be seen. .Bound for Birmingham and beyond, the train will veer to the right and proceed along the Honeybourne line and within moments, will cross over Cheltenham Lower High Street and Swindon Road etc before climbing up towards Hunting Butts Tunnel and Racecourse Station and on to Bishops Cleeve and Winchcombe... The diesel shunter parked in the single siding next to Malvern Road East Signal Box, was the replacement for the lovely, former LMS 0-6-0 Jintys from Gloucester Barnwood Shed, which used to shunt St James yard and the coal sidings down at the Moors on Tewkesbury Road. .I had the wonderful experience of spending a summer evening on the footplate of one of the Jintys with senior Barnwood driver, Bob Wyatt.. The enginemen in those days were very good to us scallywags! .. Okay! Bacon Butties for breakfast this morning, then I have to wash up from yesterday ... Oi needs me a good womun!
