Another One Bites the Dust? By Imnas Martinez-Williams, RN-BC,WCC He is just counting days. It could be today or tomorrow. His doctor has given up on him already. The verdict? Palliative care, dead in 2-3 days. I could feel the pain of his wife seeing him in anguish for pain. I can imagine him in his deathbed crying in excruciating pain. His cancer has spread everywhere and his doctor couldn’t do anything anymore but keep him pain-free which I also asked his wife to advocate for. Jimmy Perez, “mejai” to his closest friends is just counting his days. A close friend when we were attending college and both writing for our University newspaper. He was one of the coolest guys I met in college. He loved helping people. You need a replacement card for a class you refused to attend because you hate the professor? He’s got his way. You want to expedite your transcript so you could get the job you were longing for? Mejai had his way of granting those requests. I never asked how he did them but he made it possible. Mejai never failed to share his food or his school allowance with anyone in need. Our contemporaries can attest to that. In his condition, neither Morphine nor Hydromorphone couldnt relieve any of his intractable pain caused by his cancer. (UPDATE: A few hours ago I received this message that Mejai has joined the Lord.) I was so saddened about this news but at the same time relieved that my buddy is now free of any pain. Wherever he is, he will always be my big brother, my mentor and a friend. Peace be with him.
