Another beautiful dinner night this past Saturday at Be Love Farm. I have heard Matthew Engelheart speak 15+ times, and every time I learn something new. Here are some of the things that Matthew said that I think are totally worth sharing. - Modern agriculture has put more toxic chemicals into environment than any other industry. - Agriculture has put more carbon into the atmosphere than oil extraction and transportation industries combined. - If we stop using oil right now, it will take 200 years for the planet to cool down by 2 degrees. - The solution is to increase organic matter in the soil. Plants through the process of photosynthesis give 30% of their production back to the soil. - Soil health, climate health and planetary health is the same conversation. Demineralized soil produces demineralized food which leads to demineralized us. - Do you know that we are in a middle of massive plague, beyond anything imaginable even in Middle Ages? One in three is diabetes, one in two is cancer and one in four is Alzheimers. - How does an American wake up in the morning? He wakes up, takes a shower, takes his aluminum and puts it under his arm (most deodorants and anti-antiperspirants contain it), and then brushes his teeth with fluoride which activates aluminum. And we are wondering why old people one in four are walking dead? These plagues are here and now. - There are two things you can eat to help planetary health right away: compost and eat from perennials crops and grasses, i.e. eating fruits, nuts and grass-fed animals. - After being a vegetarian and then a raw vegan for 35+ years, Matthew drinks raw milk, eats raw butter and cheese and even eats occasional chicken grown on the farm. - We have insurmountable karma to the animal world for the way we have treated them and we will have to answer to that. At the same time, animals are an indispensable part of a biodynamic, permaculture style farming which is really the only way we can continue to farm if we want to have this Planet available to the generations to come.
