Another bee has lodged in my bonnet. Over 250 school girls were kidnapped over the last two weeks , some even as late as yesterday. Just Sunday, we saw a beautiful group of young girls entrusted to us. In a way, all children are entrusted to us. The leader of the kidnappers claims that god told him to sell the girls. Really? As I grow older, people who claim that God told them this or that leave me a little cold. No matter what religion, it is simply too easy to say. What atrocities are committed by folk who are convinced that they are Gods confidants. My advice, turn and run. First check your pocketbook. I believe in a God who communicates with God s people. I also believe that one must be truly humble in saying that. Yet, it seems to be a religious trump card. Whether it is someone who can speak for God, or someone who claims some infallible interpretation of scripture, or a whirling dervish, check it out. Ask questions with zesto. Don t allow me or anyone else to tell you absolutely. The Reformation gave us the widespread literacy we have today. Responsibility comes with that literacy. Ironic that the Nigerian girls were in school. Maybe that is one of the underlying causes in this outrage. I read about the movement Bossy Girls. I say yes. I married one, and boy am I glad. Bossy girls help us boys be better men. Womens rights are still not achieved. As an honorary Presbyterian woman, I am in the game. Please do something to assist in the search for these girls, daughters, sisters. Call the PCUSA and ask how you can help. Have Baptist friends, ask them. Southern Baptist have a long mission history with Nigeria. Be outraged, it is good for you and me. Pastor Sam
