Another funny story. While I was in the seventh grade, I attended Southside Junior High School. There was a boy there that I didnt like. I dont remember why. His name was Michael Butler. After PE, (physical Education) one day i decided to pick up a rock and sail it through the air and hit Michael in the head. It was a good strike because Michael had to have stitches were I hit him. Mr. Ruff was the principle that year and I had to go see him. This happened one week before the Christmas break. Mr. Ruff paddle me with a wooden paddle, more like a boat oar with holes in the end the struck my rear end. Then he told me I was being expelled for two weeks, one week before Christmas and one week after the Christmas break. Well, now I had to go see Mr Teasley at Connie Max. I figured he would paddle me to, but he didnt he said he figured Mr Ruff had done enough damage, but that I couldnt sit around in the cottage while everyone else was going to school. So, Mr. Teasley sent be to see Doc Rhodes. Now Doc Rhodes was a real character. He was kinda of scary to someone who didnt know him. On that first day I was expelled I reported to the cattle farm and doc Rhodes. When I got there, he ask me why I was there, and after I told him he said, well I don,t know what to do with you for a month. One of the black men was there, I think his name was James. Doc Rhodes said, James, take this boy out there and teach him how to drive the international. So James took me, a 12 year old delinquent out to this tractor. And told me how to press the clutch and shift the gears. After about fifteen minutes, Doc Rhodes came out and said to James, is he ready. James said, yes sir boss with that they said lets go. Doc Rhodes in his truck with James and another black man on a bigger tractor, and me on the international with fifteen minutes of going over the gears. I turned on the tractor and starting with first bucking the tractor everytime i changed gear until we got to where we were going. It was a fifteen mile ride. By the time we got to the destination I knew how to drive the tractor. So for all of my weeks of punishment my job was to drive the tractor. You think that was punishment for a twelve year old boy. Heck no, it was pure joy.
