Another heavily hyped and trailed BBC lavish production supposedly set in Birmingham (filmed in Leeds, I gather) with not a single member of the cast able to produce an accent anything like the one that pertains in the city of my youth. One actor managed to incorporate cod-Irish, a sort of Black Country intonation and a passable Cilla Black all within one sentence and one is left with the conclusion that the BBC could have spent some of the no doubt huge production costs on employing an expert on urban accents. Add to that, inappropriate incidental music, a script that hadn’t been thought through (who in 1919 used the expression “blow job”?) and one actress with a hair-do that was straight off the cover of a late twentieth century fashion mag or shampoo commercial and the phrase “could do better” seems appropriate. bbc.co.uk/programmes/p01fj945
