Another installment of: Could it be? (by all means, weigh in) The facts: Recently, a good friend had a book published by a major publisher. The book has done okay but not great. The author, my friend, is terrific on social media. Really engaged. In fact, many, many people have liked and retweeted things about the book. But they havent bought the book. The question: Is it possible that an authors social media presence might actually cannibalize sales of his or her book? I know it sounds like a stretch. But could it be that people feel like they got the gist of the book, and, further, that they got some social currency and connection to the author from liking and retweeting, and commenting on blog posts, and therefore dont feel a need to buy the book? Like I said, maybe a stretch. But what do you think?
