"Another intern at Nair Hospital catches TB"....THEFREEPRESS JOURNAL... Mumbai : Close on the heels of a medical intern, Dr Samidha Khandare, falling victim to multidrug resistant tuberculosis, another doctor from BYL Nair Hospital has been diagnosed with the infection on Tuesday. The 22-year-old final year MBBS student of Nair hospital, hails from Amravati and has been coughing since past three weeks and was under self-medication until she suspected that she was suffering from tuberculosis. “She came for the test yesterday. Her x-ray reports led us to suspect that she is suffering either from pneumonia or tuberculosis as there were visible blotches in her lungs as the x ray reports showed,” said a doctor on condition of anonymity. “The culture test of the doctor is not positive yet. The culture test takes 3-6 weeks for results. The sputum smear reports have confirmed that she has TB. However, she is still in the primary phase of tuberculosis and can be cured. She does not require tests for drug sensitivity to decide if she has any drug resistance for now,” he added. The doctor with TB in the meanwhile is very upset. “I was aware about doctors suffering from TB and thought I would never get it, now I am suffering from it. It’s very strange how we doctors who want to serve the society are ignored by the authority.” After knowing that she is speaking to the media, she refused to comment further on the cause of the disease. She has left for her hometown Amravati with the proper dosage of medicines. Meanwhile, BMC plans to start screening of doctors every three months for tuberculosis. This was announced a day after a medical intern from Sion Hospital succumbed to multi-drug resistant tuberculosis on July 1. However according to MARD doctors, no such screening has begun till now. “Since past two weeks two doctors, one resident and one intern have contracted TB. The BMC had promised after Dr Samidha’s death that they would conduct the screening camps. While the doctors are contracting TB, they are able to discover it only after two-three weeks. Till then they are active in midst of us. At least the screening camps would ensure that no such doctor pass on the bacteria,” said Dr Swapnil Kulkarni, spokesperson for MARD.
