Another key strong point in the German defenses around Mt. Verruca was Hill 591. It consisted of three stone farmhouses and was covered by Hill 732 from the rear. On the first day of the assault on September 13, 1944 the Polar Bears brought up antitank guns and tank destroyers from the 805th TD Battalion to pummel the complex from Hill 617. Company L took the position on September 14th. A 0525 the next day, Lt. Schneck radioed in that he still held two of the houses. However, the position proved untenable and he had to withdraw. The position was retaken for the final time on September 17th.
