Another opportunity to appreciate how fragile and fleeting our lives are. A few years ago my my sister-in-law Mona and I were enjoying one of our rare times together, as we have always lived in different locations. We were junk store or antique’ shopping, one of her hobbies. Driving around, we shared many thoughts of, stories about, and hopes for our families. But to me, the most moving words, and the ones, I will always remember are the ones that she made a special point of telling me. Mona said that she wanted to be sure I knew something about my brother, something that I may not have fully known any other way. Getting my full attention, she said: Cathi, I want you to know that your brother has been a wonderful husband to me. He has been a great and generous provider. He has never been mean, mistreated, or abused the children or me in any way. He is a very kind man. He has been the best father to our children and grandfather to our grandchildren that anyone could ask for. Your brother is a very loving and caring man and I wanted to share that with you, to be sure you know. Mona was married to my brother for 38 years. She passed yesterday. Now the point to this recollection isnt to praise my brother, but to show the generosity and depth of Monas spirit. I give thanks for the many gifts she shared with the world, and for the gift of my nieces and their children. For the love and years she gave her family and my brother, and especially, for the gift of her insightfully gracious words allowing me to glance not only into her heart, but also my brothers heart, and the heart of their years together on earth and beyond. Mona, you are missed and loved.
