Another reason I love being part of the YMCA. Another great story to share with you from the Stoughton Y. This was written by Erica who works in Membership. Proof positive that you all have the ability to impact the lives of others. Today I was reminded why I love my job at the Y. A woman stopped in to get a membership. She was sent in to see me after she mentioned to our staff that she was struggling financially, specifically because of her health. It took everything for me to hold it together as she told me her story. She is a breast cancer survivor who after a double mastectomy was finally feeling great, cancer free and enjoying life with her young daughter...Until the beginning of the summer where her neck started to hurt. After a few tests they found that the cancer is back, all over, in her blood and bones. She had to quit her job. Shes afraid to tell her now teenage daughter, who will be devestated. She was embarrassed to ask for help but knew she needed to stay as healthy as possible. I said well you came to the right place, We can help. As I told her some options and talked about what we do at our Y and what we could do for her, she broke down with tears, but they were tears of happiness and relief. I walked with her down the hall to introduce her to some of my amazing co-workers, who got her enrolled in our Livestrong program, where she gets not only a membership but amazing services and support. She got more than what she hoped for and you could see it in her face that she was so excited to come back and start. The weak and sad woman that walked in the door now had a smile on her face and her head held high. I wont forget the hug she gave me and the sparkle in her eye as she walked out the door. Wouldnt trade these moments for anything.
