Anti-black Mexicans using racial slurs like Mayate kill me. I have black blood coursing in my veins and I exclaim it proudly, but more importantly the contribution of Black Mexicans to Mexico are countless! The slave Gaspar Yanga established a maroon colony in Veracruz 200 years before Mexican independence, Afro-Mexican President Vicente Guerrero freed the slaves and has a state named in his honor, revolutionary general Afro-Mexican José Maria Morelos helped fight for Mexican independence and also has a state in his honor. Africans in Mexico have contributed to Mexicos culture in food, dance, music, and folk stories, I despise the thinking that seeks to erase this identity from Mexico.
