Antoine Bournonville, French ballet master and father of August Bournonville, died in Fredesborg, Denmark, on 11 January 1843, aged 82. He was born in Lyon in 1760 and studied with Georges Noverre in Vienna and Paris. He joined the Royal Swedish Ballet in 1782 on the invitation of King Gustav III, as a dancer as well as a teacher and choreographer (he created his best-known ballet, Les Meuniers provençaux, for the company in 1795). He remained there until the kings assassination in 1792, when he moved to Denmark. He joined the Royal Danish Ballet in 1795, where he danced many leading roles, especially in ballets by the ballet master, Vincenzo Galeotti. He succeeded Galeotti as ballet master of the company in 1816, continuing until 1823. His son, August Bournonville, was born in 1805.
