Any advice would be great! Im very discouraged with my mare Destiny. Destiny is a 7 yr old Thoroughbred. She turned 7 on June 7th, 2014. She has spent this whole 7th year of life overcoming a lameness that never should of happened. I tried a new farrier on June 3rd and he cut off all her heels and cut her way to short. My horse was lame within 2 days, her feet were so weak I couldnt get shoes on till August. Ive had x rays done with nerve blocking. She is currently on her 3rd set of shoes right now. She now has been sound for about a month but I just had a vet exam done with chiropractic on December 12th and the vet gave me the okay to start riding as long as she stays sound. Just no canter work right now. But I was informed that my horse may never get to jump again. We did eventing and I was just starting out with her as a new jumper myself. So yes I am a little discouraged about the jumping but it isnt the end of the world I wouldnt trade this girl for anything. Its been 2 weeks since the vet exam and I just rode my horse for the first time today. It was more of a mentally stressed out day for me than an enjoying ride that it should of been. She was very heavy on the forehand and I could really feel her balancing off of my hands. So Im sure this is because shes been out of work since June and is really out of shape. I just feel she may break down again. I mentally stress working her as I feel I may hurt her or cause her to take 10 steps backwards. I am a worried mother I know. She will be seeing the vet again middle of January for chiropractic work. But vet says shes sound, she was negative to all flexion tests on hard gravel and soft arena. So now that you know some background info here is my main concern. I want to bring her back slowly and strong. I am in no hurry to rush to a show or start canter work. Ive been trying to find some advice of exercises I could do with my mare to bring her back slow and strong. The vet gave me in hand and on ground stretches and exercises to do with her. But I need some riding exercise advise. She mentioned side passing and leg yielding to get her shoulders moving and working and to also trot over 2-3 ground poles but what else could I do? I dont know how much is too much for her.... Before all this we were riding 4-5 days a week, 2 days Dressage work, 1 lesson jump/Dressage, 1 jump ride with gymnastics, and 1 hack around the field/ trail ride if we had 5 days. She was very much in shape but now shes weak in my opinion and needs a lot of conditioning. I just want to state again vet said No Canter work till we can make sure she stays sound with riding at walk/trot. She also is outside 24/7 all year so gets plenty of moving around time when Im not there. This pic is from today, Shes a little filthy but its the most recent body shot I have of her.
