Any person can become a groomer, there is only voluntary - TopicsExpress

Any person can become a groomer, there is only voluntary certification, and voluntary personal insurance. No license is required and no testing for skills. There are 2 states that currently have some laws on the books for the grooming industry, Colorado and Connecticut. There are a few professional associations providing voluntary certifications but it is not a condition of employment or a requirement for entry into the field of pet grooming. Guidelines for the purpose of certification are not necessarily applicable to the real world of commercial pet grooming and hygiene care needs of the family pet. The state is the only authority that can legislate the growing need for laws to regulate individuals and require training and educational minimums. When a business or professional announces that they are State Licensed and Certified, the overall positive effect on potential customer confidence and trust is increased. Unfortunately, because the pet grooming industry has no State licensing requirement the fear does happen. And many pet owners are assuming that if they are a business operating in my state there must be some authority or agency having oversight. That is not the case in the pet grooming industry. Today the pet grooming business is a fast growing industry as people are choosing to operate out of their homes, opening a facility or a mobile grooming shop. With no requirements or standards involved, undeveloped skills and incomplete training, the groomers have a lack of academic knowledge of product safety and hazards, animal handling and control techniques, breed behavior and temperament, parasite diseases and vaccination importance. Without state licensing and governing, groomers may not be possessing the necessary skills or knowledge to enter into the market place. Regulations and oversight would prevent such deficiencies. State licensing would also require the pet grooming businesses to improve their service and educational quality of their pet grooming staff. Grooming of the family pet for those seeking this type of career will then be worthy of the 21st century needs of pet owners. The grooming industry deals with health, hygiene amd sanitation, without regulations many unknown risks exist for the pet and pet groomer. In this unregulated profession there is also risk to our environment as well. Please tell your lawmakers to bring the grooming industry into the 21st century and demand state laws to govern this profession. Health and lives are at stake for the animals and the people.
