Any which way you look at it, Google had to spend billions buying patents from Motorola. Google has the deep pockets to afford that luxury. What if Android was started as a small company? Promising, but without the billions? They would have had no choice but to sell to a Google to get them out of the patent mess. I still dont understand that point behind software patents. All it does is stifle innovation, cause ugly patent battles and breed patent trolls. Anyone can define and invent a software system for X or Y. It takes a LOT MORE to execute on the software system and make it a real and flourishing business. Successful technology businesses shouldnt have to spend billions defending themselves against software patent holders who didnt do much more than file a patent an abstract idea in a creative manner.
