Anybody remember Royal City? I was reminded of their existence when I saw Bry Webb perform the other night, because his band, The Constantines, released their debut on the same Guelph based independent label, Three Gut Records. Royal Citys 2000 debut, At Rush Hour the Cars, had this heartfelt, minimal, idiosyncratic folk sound that was unlike anything Id heard. I think I borrowed a friends vinyl copy. The amount of negative sonic space in the songs was almost disconcerting. The ambient silence between sounds was often itself like another member of the band, who played along on an unnameable instrument in a hermetically sealed chamber, audible only to herself. There are moments when the band seems to back off so as to give this silent, absent member the opportunity to fully express the ineffable emotions her isolation evokes; these moments are somber, like an offering of food and incense smoke to the spirits of the dead. I want to listen to this album again, but I cant seem to find it. There are a couple tracks on Youtube, but thats it. Any Canadian music geeks able to help me out? If you havent heard this half-forgotten gem of Canadian music, please take a moment: https://youtube/watch?v=q2Pz5n5ZeWU
