Anybody remember this? Trinity Protesters Turn Out En Masse Sydney Morning Herald Sunday October 1, 1989 CAIRNS: More than 10,000 people took part in a protest yesterday over a$500 million tourist development proposed by a corporation of which the Sydney businessman Mr Michael Grace is a leading shareholder. The Save Our Shores rally was the biggest ever in North Queensland. Mr Grace is one of the two principal shareholders of the McKeller Development Corporation, which is behind the Trinity Point project, an ambitious plan to build facilities on artificial islands the size of the citys existing central business district. The organisers hoped yesterdays turnout would force the State Government to reconsider its support for the development. A four-lane freeway way would link the islands to the mainland. A flotilla of 150 boats formed a perimeter representing the 88 hectares the project would occupy. The Mayor of Cairns, Alderman Keith Goodman, waded through the Trinity Inlet together with the rally organiser, Dr Mike Mansfield, to raise the flag of Cairns, reclaiming the mudflat for the city. Mr Goodman said 22,000 signatures opposing the development didnt appear to be enough to deter the Government or the developers. We didnt ask for this development and we dont want it, he said. Dr Mansfield has been issued with four writs for defamation by the Trinity Point Development Company.
