Anyone else think the SNL sources comment is the weakest of sauce? - TopicsExpress

Anyone else think the SNL sources comment is the weakest of sauce? My take: Every week I have to submit a bunch of headlines to the Onion, and theres always overlap. Its basically a demolition derby where the best pitch is selected by the narrowest of margins. Ive had pitches that were literally one word off from others that went to production. The difference is, those were timely pitches about a specific list of current events, turned around at the exact same time as twenty other writers. Parallel writing is a feature, not a bug. This does not sound like parallel writing to me. Riverboat casinos are not trending. Tina Turner hasnt been relevant to the SNL target demo since before most of them were born. The odds of Nebraska being the punchline state in both sketches strike me as low. This has happened twice to people very close to me. Both instances were evergreen sketches, well off the cultural radar, and quite shocking to see. And it was always a shrug it off, what are you gonna do affair. Today, all the talk about this is coming from outside the factory cities (NYC, LA, Chicago). I dont think thats insignificant. Like most of my improviser friends, I know quite a few people who work at SNL. I dont want to throw any of them under the bus. But I dont think the show can afford to shrug this kind of thing off. If Im running a writing room, I would want to know if one of my people was ripping off a Sunday matinee somewhere. And if this really is a case of ESP, Id want the evidence out there so my people arent crucified on the internet for something they didnt do. Either way, you should stand up and take care of your show. avclub/article/saturday-night-live-accused-stealing-sketch-ground-210132
