Anyone read John and Patricia Jones Letter to the Editor published in the Orlando Sentinel this morning? John and Patricia are members of Sweetwater Oaks and live on Sweetwater Creek Drive, East. I dont agree with his conclusion that the bears need to be euthanized or relocated. He claims that development has not displace the bears. I dont agree with that claim either. The problems he refers to of Bears roaming in my backyard after smashing down my solid-wood fence are neither cute nor funny. and having a bear go into his garage once last year seems to be a minor inconvenience. Bears are not social animals and only have a territory concept of property. So it is not surprising that they can and do damage fences as they move from one property to another. Perhaps we should put access ways for them instead of making moving from one place to another difficult by a solid wall of fencing. Frankly the urban human sense of property contradicts any sense of community and debilitates our neighborhoods. We need to improve our sense of community especially among the elderly in Sweetwater Oaks, protecting them from an abusive violation policy as much as from any threat of bears. So I wonder if something else is troubling John and Patricia. Perhaps they feel isolated and living for almost 30 years in an HOA that has been neglecting our sense of community. I had a bear in my back yard two years ago and it did damage to the two doors to my pool enclosure, walking through them like they were air, and the fence between my property and my neighbors. I just accepted it as part of the privileged of living IN bear territory. So far Ive not had a bear go through my garbage in my garage but I dont put anything in the garbage container that would tempt a bear. Im sure John and Patricia are good people and try to live with most of the wild life but it seems they might need some help in understanding that they are living IN bear territory and it is not bears invading human territory but humans invading bear territory that is the real problem. We need a comprehensive plan that includes the prevention of new human invasion (urban developments) in bear territory.
