Anyone read the Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglas? This is what he taught me. He didn’t focus on hate. Instead, his story tells of the horrific atrocities he faced and how he overcame. If he had only written of hate, he would have given power and glory to those who had wronged him. Instead, he writes of hope and of overcoming against all odds. We know him to be one of the greatest orators of his age: one of the most influential African American leaders of the 19th Century. Let your story be one of hope. Focus on what you have become, not on the others who have wronged you. Don’t focus on anger, it only drags you down. Focus on the beauty of who you are and give hope to others finding their way. Show others how to be an overcomer.
