Anyone remember Bennie Gatewood? He was born August 22, 1921 and passed away October 19, 1995. He ran (and I believe owned) the original Cubs Den which was across the street from Central. When I was a student at the old Central Jr. High from 1966 through 1969, I would go to Cubs Den to get their famous Chili Pie. When I became a teacher and coach at Central Mid-High in 1976, Bennie was still running the Cubs Den. When we would have home basketball games at Central we would get soft drink canisters from Bennie to be used in our concession stand. Our concession area was tables set up in the hallway of Boyd Hall just outside of the auditorium. He would also give us all the ice we needed for any event. My first year at Central, we invited Bennie to our end of the year All Sports Picnic at Andrews Park and gave him a Distinguished Service plaque. You would have thought it was Christmas! He was so proud that we would recognize him. He was another great friend of Central for many years. From what I could find, he was working as a salesman for Coca-Cola Bottling Company as early as 1947, and retired from their company just prior to his death in 1995. He was another great friend of Central Mid-High! Hope to get some stories about Bennie from some of you! The picture is his Senior Picture from Central High School in Oklahoma City. He graduated in 1940.
