Anyone who knows our family at all, knows that today marks the 3 year anniversary of a date that will be haunting for the rest of our lives. As much as you try and convince your mind and thoughts to go elsewhere, the cells of your very being remember it all too clearly. So much has changed in our lives since that day...the good, the bad, and the ugly sort of speak...but nobody can understand what it is like to walk in the shoes of another, unless you yourself have truly walked that walk. As I searched this morning for pictures that Gabriella needed for Show N Tell, inevitably my eyes fell on literally hundreds upon hundreds of pictures that told the story of the last 3 years. Life is about perspective and most certainly 3 years ago, what I am about to say, would not in any way, shape, or form have been my perspective. Jason Kuehler, as the quote goes, When something bad happens, you can let it define you, destroy you, or strengthen you. Giving credit where credit is due, you have beat the odds and turned a tragic event, one you will live with forever, into hundreds of lessons for others. You have most assuredly saved others from suffering the same pain as you have walked into firehouse upon firehouse and shared your story. You have become a source of support to strangers who have been burned and spent countless hours volunteering at Bayview. You have helped our children to have a greater sense of compassion for those who are suffering. You have found a strength in yourself as you fought to overcome the physical challenges of your injuries and return to your passion of being a firefighter. The countless new friends and relationships you have formed are certainly priceless and the opportunities you have had to travel and participate in fundraisers, conferences, and trips such as Colorado are ones that I believe have brought an entirely new side of you to light. You suffered so that others may live and just perhaps this terrible and life changing event was given to you to bring out the brotherhood in your friends, show the good in people, help others to suffer less, and make your life more purposeful than you ever imagined. The story didnt turn out entirely how we thought, but thankfully you still have many chapters to live.
