Anyone who lives in Berkeley, Calif., who gets a prescription for pot (a cinch to do by claiming “pain” to most doctors), and makes less than $32,000/yr or $46,000/yr per family can now receive free marijuana. The irony is that those who got into the marijuana dispensary business thinking they were going to make a lot of easy money are now going to be required to distribute at least two percent of their inventory this way. But according to the Daily Mail: Critics of the program are furious. ‘It’s ludicrous, over-the-top madness,’ Bishop Ron Allen, a former addict who runs the International Faith Based Coalition, told Fox News. ‘Why would Berkeley City Council want to keep their poverty-stricken under-served high, in poverty and lethargic?’ ‘Instead of taking steps to help the most economically vulnerable residents get out of that state, the city has said, “Let’s just get everybody high,”‘ lobbyist John Lovell, of the California Narcotic Officers’ Association, told the Times. There are some people who are legitimately sick and in pain, who may really benefit from marijuana. But this sweeping regulation by the Berkeley City Council fails to take into account all the people who will abuse the system, ruining their lives. It’s cruel to enact a regulation this broad that will destroy so many.
