Anything Considered, by Peter Mayle. A bored, unemployed - TopicsExpress

Anything Considered, by Peter Mayle. A bored, unemployed Englishman, living in France on his wits and not wanting to go back to a regular job, advertises his willingness to do anything, except marriage, in a local paper. Hes quickly contacted by another Englishman, very wealthy and living nearby, to spend the next 6 months living it up in Monaco while impersonating him as part of a tax scam. Bored Englishman accepts and is immediately embroiled in schemes about growing truffles, evading criminals, double and triple crosses, etc. I will say right now that this is not a bad book, but it is a very ordinary one with nothing remarkable about it at all. The use of language had nothing original, and the characters were stock at best and clichés at worst. The Italian gangster, intended to be comic relief, was such an extreme cliché hairiness, lechery and bad English that the portions of the story he turned up in were actually painful to read. I cant say it wouldnt make an enjoyable, light read for some but I found it a waste of my time.
