Incidentally, though Turing himself thought a Turing Test might be possible to design and pass, he was ambivalent as to what, if anything, could be deduced from that with regards to intelligence and cognition: The original question, Can machines think? I believe to be too meaningless to deserve discussion. [Turing, A.M. (1950). Computing machinery and intelligence. Mind, 59, 433-460.] Modern-day linguists and cognitive scientists share Turings skepticism; Noam Chomsky likens the question Can machines think? to questions like Can submarines swim? or Can airplanes fly? - they are metaphors, use them if youd like, and thats pretty much the end of it.
