Anytime Ive spoken with a teacher of mine about Islamic studies - TopicsExpress

Anytime Ive spoken with a teacher of mine about Islamic studies theyve always pushed me towards the deobandi curriculum alim program, which I have absolutely no problem with and am fully convinced of its authenticity and methodology (though I have my fair share of criticisms about the pedagogy, as would anyone entitled to a personal opinion). What I do find a little problematic is that any time Ive inquired about studying in Madinah, or Yemen, or Egypt, or Zaytuna in the US, or Malaysia, or Mauritania (these are mainly the places Ive looked into, in addition to South Africa, Pakistan and local) I always get a negative response. Ive then asked for alternatives for the sake of knowing the types of school systems one can study Islam in and its as if all other systems, schools or ideologies are a danger to me; Im always told to do alim course first and then you can do whatever you want. Its frustrating because I feel as though Im being confined to stick to certain type of study. *My complaint isnt about the deobandi system at all, its mainly about how I feel like Ive erred or sinned for inquiring about alternatives.* Thoughts?
