Anyway I got two day tickets to fly fish, one of the most - TopicsExpress

Anyway I got two day tickets to fly fish, one of the most interesting lakes in the country geologicaly and historicaly, if not the most. it is a flooded limestone quarry high in th pennines at the edge of the dales. How about fishing untold depths that contains a cave where the bones of Elephant, Rhinoceros, Roebuck, Hyena, Lion, Hippopotamus and Bear were found? Or take this muster for lothersdale a tiny originaly pagan community where it lies Twenty-eight men were summoned from Lothersdale and they were directed to meet at Bracewell on 27th and 28th March, and on the 1st day of April, 1539. One man from Lothersdale is described as not hable, so that twenty seven men from here went to Bracewell. It would be a motley crowd, all shapes and sizes would be represented. Eleven men had both horse and harness, there were fifteen bill-men and twelve archers, and one man, John Tillotson, was both a bill-man and an archer. Three men had jaks, that is leather jackets, three had salets -light helmets, and four had their own bills. From the names on the list it is evident that there have been great changes in the family names here since 1539. There are four Smythes in the list (all spelt with a y), a Thomas Wilkynson, and a John Hewet. The rest are: three Middlebrooks, four Tillotsons, three Ricrofts, two Dawtrys, and one each named Scott, Barrett, Bonds, Ripon, Bynng, Ferrant, Sympson, Swier, and an Akercombe who was the man described as not hable. An excellent book that these extracts are from is on line;-lothersdaleparishcouncil.co.uk/Core/Lothersdale-PC/UserFiles/Files/HistoryofLothersdale.pdf Anyway, managed to pick the wrong day for fishing, I had plenty of follows but the fish were very lethargic, I did get one trout of 212/ lb, but it gave itself up, and all it needed was a knob of butter, it came out cooked, talk about boil in a bag. There was just not enough oxygen in the water. I know some fishing has been stopped in the lakes due to fish being unable to swim back to deeper water from low oxygen in the upper layers. Anyway coaxed him back. I had a small perch, smaller than the fly. Sods law I had found a fly that at last caught a trout and next cast snapped it off in my excitement, doh! Then it started to rain, in no time I was soaked, but it was rather nice, but the sudden thunder and lightning saw me retreat to the shed, 12 foot of carbon in your hand is not a good idea, where I had a lovely chat and a free mug of coffee, it soon stopped but I had nothing after that. I will wait for the weather to change me thinks. But I had a great day, truly an amazing place tucked away high in the pennines, and theres always the geology, and it was crystal clear, droppping from shallow edge of rocks covered in weed that looked like coral to the ink black depths in inches not feet, fishing a rock walkway with water on both side and untold depths, it has atmosphere in spades. Great day.
