Appalachian Power Storm Response Summary Wednesday, June 11, 2014 – 7 p.m. Appalachian Power has made progress in addressing significant power outages across its service territory resulting from strong thunderstorms and rotating winds of up to 65 miles an hour that moved through the area Tuesday evening, June 10. The storm caused significant damage to the system, including broken poles and downed wires. Initial efforts focused on restoring service to life-supporting entities and addressing hazards. Weather A second line of thunderstorms moved through the service area on Wednesday, resulting in additional outages and delaying restoration efforts. Meteorologists are forecasting additional scattered thunderstorms Appalachian Power’s service area Wednesday night and Thursday, which could further affect restoration efforts in some locations. Outages As of 7 p.m. Wednesday, about 31,000 customers, mostly in Cabell and Kanawha counties of West Virginia, remained without electricity, down from a high of about 67,000 customers in West Virginia, Virginia and Tennessee Tuesday night. Estimated restoration times are •Beckley, Charleston, Hico, Madison and surrounding areas – 10 p.m. Thursday. •Glasgow, Walgrove, Logan, Williamson and surrounding areas – 10 p.m. Friday. •Hamlin, Milton, Point Pleasant, Ripley and surrounding areas – 6 p.m. Thursday. •Huntington, Wayne and surrounding areas – midnight Friday. •Kingsport and surrounding areas, except Clintwood – 9 p.m. Wednesday. •Clintwood – 6 p.m. Thursday. •Roanoke and surrounding areas – midnight Wednesday. Resources Appalachian Power notified its workers and contractors Tuesday to be packed and ready to respond Wednesday morning. Those crews moved into the hardest hit areas early Wednesday and were able to restore power to more than half of those affected. An additional 400 line mechanics and 100 assessors have been brought in or will arrive on Thursday to assist company restoration efforts. Full restoration will be a multi-day effort.
