Appalling. If one attends a church where a blind eye is turned or worse yet the abused spouse is told to remain, DONT JUST LEAVE THE SPOUSE, LEAVE the church. This is not God, EVER! Abusers must demonstrate a long history of getting help without the abused being around before one should ever even entertain a thought of looking to reconcile. And Im NOT saying go back even at that point! Domestic violence is a REAL problem. Ive known people told to return to an abuser. Ive dealt with the aftermath with families and children for those who survived and those who DIDNT. The church needs to be a safe place to get real, not a codependent junkie who protects its image More than its people. God is not an isolator, He is an insulator. He says come out of the dark, dont return to it. Be a safe place for others to get real. Abuse victims feel isolated and powerless. Grab their hands and walk with them thru the valley of the shadow of death. Remind them they are powerful. Be their voice if needed. Encourage them to speak and be there when they do. Break the cycle. The life you save may be someone you know. THIS is what a true church does.
