Appalling To the editor: Last week’s Supreme Court ruling - TopicsExpress

Appalling To the editor: Last week’s Supreme Court ruling in favor of Hobby Lobby is appalling. While cloaked in the guise of religious freedom, the ruling has far reaching consequences. This is 2014, when 99% of women take birth control pills at some point in their lives. Witness a decision by a group of outdated conservative old men who want nothing more than to be able to turn back the clock on women, once and for all! The ruling clearly discriminates against women by denying them coverage for basic health care. While some birth control pills are prescribed to prevent unwanted pregnancy, other prescribed uses go far beyond that: controlling endometrial disease, preventing ovarian cancer and lowering maternal and infant mortality rates are just some of them. And they have nothing to do with religious freedom or contraception. Scott Brown applauded the Hobby Lobby decision. In his short time in Congress, he also applauded (even co-sponsored) the Blunt amendment, which denied women health coverage from mammograms to birth control. His strong stand on this issue makes him a danger to women’s health everywhere. Jeanne Shaheen understands women’s health needs. While governor, she signed a bipartisan contraception mandate into law. She understands that these vital health decisions are private matters between a woman and her doctor. In the next few years, it may be the Senate’s responsibility to approve the appointment of a new Supreme Court Justice, the one who will help balance the Roberts’ court. Who do you want making that decision? A man who sides with the corporate lobby against women, or Jeanne Shaheen, a proven staunch supporter of women’s health in New Hampshire and around the country.
