Apparently, Nicoles malady: Idiopathic Subglottic Stenosis occurs - TopicsExpress

Apparently, Nicoles malady: Idiopathic Subglottic Stenosis occurs almost exclusively in women. None of the more common causes of this uncommon condition are present in her which is why a round of testing for possible auto-immune disorders such as Relapsing polychondritis have been ordered. We were confused about why Dr. Elluru ordered these labs this late in the game and presumably this close to a resection then I read on Mayo and Mass General ENT pages on Tracheal Stenosis that this testing is required before performing the very effective but unusual and delicate resection to permanently repair her airway. Between babies, many long hospital days, and Nicoles inability to service her lungs with adequate air for an active life, our exploring and hiking days have too long been put on hold. While my whole family is giddy with the hope of my dad having a new (used) heart someday might have him tossing ball with his grandsons or batting Tennis with his granddaughters, I am personally very excited at the thought that one day Nicole can also climb, hike, and otherwise exert herself without the possibility of asphyxiation or at least out-of-breath-exhaustion. We hope the upcoming dilation on the 25th will be her last before a permanent surgical repair is performed.
