Awami Workers Party Pakistan 1stCongress: Request for Contributions Dear comrade Hashmi, Here is a finance appeal for the AWP first congress, Please talk to AWP comrades in London and other cities and send some contribution for this important congress. I have already send this to Ammar Jan as well. Farooq Tariq Awami Workers Party Pakistan (AWP –the Party) is holding its 1st Delegate Congress on 29-30 March, 2014 at Islamabad. Ideological, political and organizational sessions would deliberate on way forward for building this initiative of the Left in Pakistan. A rally would take out at the end of the Congress against feudalism, capitalism and fundamentalism on 29th afternoon from Aabpara Chouck to the parliament. Over 350 delegates will travel from around the country to reach Islamabad to make a political point, “we do not accept this system, we want to change this in favour of working class”. The 1stCongress is in a way, a formal launch of the Party. Formed in November 2012, after merger of three left-wing parties, in its first year and a half, AWP has taken important political and organization steps to further the Socialist voices. AWP has become the largest Left party in Pakistan attracting thousands of workers and peasants to its fold. Basic units and organizational structures have been established and district and provincial congresses have been held in provinces of Sindh, Punjab, Seriaki Wasaib, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Baluchistan. Given the disputed status of Gilgit-Balistan (GB), the Party did not establish a unit in BG. Instead a sister organization is about to be established in BG. AWP also took part in general elections in three provinces to launch the Party. The Party carried out a number of political activities mainly rallies and campaigns for land reforms and land rights of kachi-abadies attended by thousands of working class people, with greater participation of women. AWP also held rallies in all major cities against the US imperialist interventions in Syria and to express solidarity with the Syrian Peoples’ Revolution. The Party also filed a petition to the Secretary-General of the United Nations condemn the impending American bombing of Syria and urging the members of the UN Security Council to fulfill their mandate to prevent any further rupture of world peace and to stop a military intervention which threatens international security in the volatile region. AWP joined the Long March by the Voice for Baluch Missing Persons and walked with the marchers by feet from Sindh to Islamabad. The Party conducted rallies against military operations in Baluchistan. Numerous street protests were taken out against religious fundamentalism and to campaign for separation of religion and the state; against terrorist attacks, mainly on Shias and Christians; and forced conversions and marriages of Hindu girls. A delegate women convention was held on the woman question on 2nd March 2014 in Lahore attended by over 69 delegates and 500 working class women, approving Party position and organizational structure from feminist-socialist perspective. AWP plans to raise a million Rupees ($10,000) for this important event to contribute towards the cost of the Congress including accommodation and food for 350 delegates, in-city transport for delegates and mobilization for rally, campaign materials and venue expenditures. All delegates are raising their travel cost by themselves or with help of local, district or provincial chapters. We have already raised around 25% of this cost from the Party membership and want to raise the rest with contributions by Party friends inside Pakistan and abroad. Please send your contributions to the following address used by the Party until AWP’s own account is opened in a formal bank.
