Apple unveiled two new iPhones — iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C — at its headquarters in Cupertino, California on Tuesday. Phil Schiller, head of marketing, came on to the stage and launched the iPhone 5C first, which will come in green, strawberry pink, sky blue, lemon yellow, white and black colours. It is made of hard-coated polycarbonate and will have a four-inch display, the same size as the iPhone 5. It will be powered by a A6 processor. The 5C will have an 8MP iSight camera, with the five-element lens and IR filter as seen on the iPhone 5. The phone will have a battery larger than the iPhone 5’s. Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook described the phone as "the most forward-thinking phone we’ve ever created, perhaps that anyone has ever made. Packed with incredible technologies in service of using these in the way we want to". The 16GB 5C is priced at $99 (Dh363) and 32GB 5C at $199 for two-year contract in the US. Schiller then introduced the 5S, the new flagship iPhone. It is made of a high-grade aluminium, with diamond-cut, chamfered edges. It will come in silver, gold, and space grey colours. It has an A7 chip and 64-bit. "[This is] the world’s first 64-bit mobile phone. The PC world made the transition from 32 bit to 64-bit and it took years. Today you’re going to see that Apple is going to do it on one day," he said. It is twice as fast as the previous-generation system, and has twice the graphics performance as well. The battery life has also improved, giving the new smartphone 10 hours of 3G talk time, 10 hours of LTE browsing, 40 hours of music, 250 hours standby and 10 hours of video. The new iSight camera lens comes with f/2.2 aperture and with 15 per cent larger sensor. The 16GB iPhone 5S is priced at $199, 32GB at $299 and 64GB at $399 with contract in the US, same as the iPhone 5. The 5C is available in US on September 13. On September 20, users can purchase the 5C and the 5S. "New iPhones will be available in 100 countries and 270 carriers in December," Schiller said. Countries to see the initial launch include the US, Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Japan, Singapore and the United Kingdom. Apple has not given a launch date for devices outside of these countries. The Apple event was opened by Cook, who came to the stage and made a special point of welcoming "for those joining us in Beijing, Berlin and Tokyo". He talked first about the iOS7, Apple’s operating system, and its 200 new features. "We’ve been hard at work on iOS 7 and next month we will ship the 700 millionth iOS device," he said. He said iOS 7 will quickly become the world’s most popular operating system. Apple announced that it is going to release iOS 7 for free on September 18. It will be available for all iPhone 4, all new iPads since the iPad 2, the iPad mini and the fifth generation iPod touch. Apple also announced that popular apps iWork, iPhoto, iMovie on iOS will now be free. 1:48 pm The iPhone 5C will cost $549, that is Dh2,000 (approx), off contract. Off contract is the phone not linked to a telecom service provider’s plan. For $100 more, an UAE Apple fan can have the real deal - iPhone 5S which is priced at $640 off contract, Dh2,400 (approx).- This means that all Apple die-hards here in the UAE and elsewhere, will have to shell out Dh2,000 at least to get their hands on the iPhone 5C now. On September 20, the two devices will go on sale in the United States, Australia, Britain, China, France, Germany, Japan and Singapore.
