Apples Use of NFC Holds Potential for Access Control Industry Security InfoWatch (09/16/14) Griffin, Joel The near field communications (NFC) antenna design included in Apples new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus could be used for access control applications. The access control market has long considered NFC as an industry game changer that could eliminate the need for key cards and relax end-user administrative burdens. Blake Kozak, a senior analyst for security and building technologies at IHS, noted that NFC historically has had performance and usability issues, but that Apple’s use of NFC could move it into an area where it is considered a more viable option for access control. There are still policy issues to be worked out within enterprise applications, including who oversees the credential and how companies with bring-your-own device policies can manage a secure credential on phones they do not control.
