Application for Student Senate (2013-2014) So confident am I in the intentions, as well as wisdom, of the government, that I shall always be satisfied that what is not done, either cannot, or ought not to be done. -Thomas Jefferson Welcome to the new year and another year of Columbus Alternative High School’s Student Senate! This packet consists of a brief history of the Student Senate, what we will participate in/plan, the roles of each senator/officer and an enclosed application to apply to run for Columbus Alternative’s Student Senate. The Basics: • Each grade will elect four (4) senators and two (2) senators at large. This will bring the Student Senate to 19 members; four from each grade, two at large from the special education center, and a president. • Attendance is a major priority. Do not campaign if you do not think that you will to attend the majority of the meetings. • This being said, we are not saying that you are not allowed to participate in other activities, Student Senate should just become a priority. • Athletes will be excused from meetings during their season, but please refrain from applying if you cannot dedicate less than 2/3 of your school year to Student Senate. • The Student Senate is mainly responsible for activities such as the Fall Dance, Semi-Formal, Student Olympics, all other school dances, fundraisers and various community service jobs. • The Senate is comprised of four (4) officers [President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer] and four (4) committees [dance, communication, community service, student olympics]. Eligibility to Campaign for a Student Senator Position: A student wishing to run in the upcoming elections must meet ALL of these requirements. • A candidate must be a member of the grade for which s/he seeks to represent on the Student Senate. • A candidate must possess necessary academic credits for the grade to be represented. • Except for the 9th grade candidates, or candidates of persons transferring from another school, each candidate must have achieved a grade point average of at least 2.5 cumulative. • 9th grade candidates must have obtained a 2.5 GPA or higher in their immediately preceding academic quarter. • Academic probation will be enforced, meaning all senators must maintain at least a 2.5 GPA throughout the entire year. • Sitting senators are expected to acquire no major disciplinary infractions. If these infractions occur, repercussions will be granted. • A candidate running for a 12th grade student senator position must not hold a Senior Class officer position or NHS officer position (meaning President or Vice President). • A candidate must submit all necessary campaign forms by due date to Student Senate teacher-advisor. Failure to fill out forms correctly will result in immediate disqualification. Expectations of Senators: Senators need to have most of the characteristics listed below. • RELIABLE • Outgoing • Leadership Skills • Collaboration Skills • Time Management Skills (Senate MUST be a priority) • Trustworthy • Speak Mind (appropriately) Election Timeline: September 13-18: Application packets will be available for students. September 19: Applications are due. Turn in applications either to Mr. Bartels (room 220 or his mailbox in the office) September 20-27: Qualified students will be notified, by the end of the day, if they are eligible to run for office. Campaigning can begin immediately. (See rules of campaigning for more information). September 20: Student paragraphs will be on display for all to see in the cafeteria. September 30: Elections will take place in respective humanities classrooms. October 1: Officers will be announced and notified. Rules of Campaigning: • No negative campaigning. Negative campaigning will result in immediate disqualification. • Campaign materials must follow the guidelines from Columbus City Schools’ ‘codes and conduct’ book. • Campaign materials may only be hung in the cafeteria and the hallway between the cafeteria and the gym. • Do not hang posters on paint in the hallways. This may include qualities that you embody, previous experience with leadership, etc. This essay will be posted in the cafeteria for your classmates to read, with the intent that they can get to know you a bit better and more accurately choose who will be the best candidate to sit in CAHS’ Student Senate. Typed is preferred, but not mandatory. It will help us more, as we then can copy the essay, and not type it up.
