April 15, 2014. Goliath Ain’t Really That Big... All those gathered here will know that it is not by sword or spear that the LORD saves; for the battle is the LORD’s, and he will give all of you into our hands. 1 Samuel 17:47 Such an inspiring story of Victory from an unlikely hero. David was considered too young, too inexperienced, not armed well enough, the least likely to win this battle. But God plus one person makes a majority. With God all things are possible. And David knew that, so he stepped up to the plate. David is remembered as a man after God’s own heart, & you can see that in this story. He wanted to obey God, & he wanted, “all those gathered here to know that it is not by sword or spear that the Lord saves.” Saul & all the Israelite Army were too fearful to fight this giant, because they looked at their natural resources, & thought he was too big. But David looked at God, who is obviously much bigger than Goliath, and he fought the battle God’s way, not man’s way. Because God’s ways are higher than our ways. He said, “for the battle is the LORD’s, and he will give all of you into our hands.” He spoke the language of victory, even before the battle had begun. I remember when I first became a pastor, I felt too young & not well-armed & with all the battles we faced, I had to learn to trust in God not myself. I found encouragement from the Casting Crowns song, “Voice of Truth.” It says: “Oh what I would do to have The kind of strength it takes to stand before a giant With just a Sling and a stone Surrounded by the sound of a thousand warriors Shaking in their armor Wishing theyd have had the strength to stand But the giants calling out my name and he laughs at me Reminding me of all the times Ive tried before and failed The giant keeps on telling me Time and time again boy, youll never win! Youll never win But the voice of truth tells me a different story And the voice of truth says Do not be afraid! And the voice of truth says This is for My glory Out of all the voices calling out to me I will choose to listen and believe the voice of truth We need to tune in to the voice of truth. Let all the negative words & arrows be deflected by the shield of faith. Let the words all the naysayers & the critics just roll off you, like water off a ducks back, have an unoffendable spirit. When those Goliaths come, don’t say look how big he is, say look how big my God is. Or that giant is so big, I can’t miss him with my slingshot! Let’s use whatever God has put in our hand to defeat the enemy, no matter how much the odds are stacked up against us! If God be for me, who can be against me! Greater is he that’s in me, than he that’s in the world! It’s not by might or by power, but by my Spirit says the Lord! Thank you Lord that the battle is the Lords! Help me to remember this no matter what trials or tribulation we are going through. I will trust in you, & use whatever you place in my hand. In Jesus name, Amen.
