April 1945 Former inmates of Buchenwald, Germany Buchenwald concentration camp was opened in 1937. Thousands were imprisoned in Buchenwald, primarily political prisoners and individuals identified as “asocial”. After Kristallnacht, in November 1938, approximately 10,000 Jews were sent to Buchenwald. Most were released after approximately one month. In 1943 many of the prisoners in Buchenwald began working as forced laborers in ammunitions factories that were opened nearby. In January 1945, with the evacuation of Auschwitz and other camps in the East, thousands of Jewish prisoners arrived in Buchenwald. On April 6 the Germans began evacuating Buchenwald as well. Approximately 25,000 inmates were murdered or perished during the evacuation. The camp was liberated on April 11, 1945.
