April 24, 2014 John 14:16–17 (ESV) And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you. Our Helper Jesus promised the disciples to send them a Helper, the Holy Spirit who would guide them into all truth. This Helper would never leave them and he would dwell inside of them, not just alongside of them like Jesus had done. We may not always realize it or think about it, but the Holy Spirit has taken up residence inside the life of every true believer in Christ. He is an ever-present source of help and comfort. He also is a convicting agent of God when we do wrong. There are often misunderstandings about the Holy Spirit and when or how we become filled with him. Each believer has been sealed by the Holy Spirit (Eph. 1:13, 14), and he is our pledge for eternal life to come. There is no possible way we can live this life outside of his presence, his influence, his comfort, and his place in the plan of salvation for us. The Helper Jesus promises is the only way we as Christians are ever successful in living out this life God has designed for us. Without him, we would be left in our own strength, and that would be a recipe for failure. Question for Growth Are you experiencing the successful life Christ promised his followers? Allowing the Helper to empower you is the key. Prayer Helper of God, take up full-time residence inside of me that I might become fully what you have designed me to become. Amen.
