April 5, 2014 Day five of autism info Chriffys journey~ I left off talking about sensory issues... I drove chriffy back and fourth to the therapy place a few times a week for over a year. He made some gains and we met great people. This is where we met Jillian Gartland, one of the best speech therapists!! She was a lifesaver to him. And me!! She helped me fight the board of Ed, to implement certain therapies into his school day, she directed me towards the biomedical approach to healing chriffy. She realized there was so much more going on under the surface that needed to be addressed and healed first!! She was an angel to me. I will never forget her support and love she showed my family during this time. She directed me to Dr Hift in NYC, she suggested I research supplements, leaky gut, inflammation etc!! She truly put us on the right path. She used oral motor techniques on chriffy to try to get his mouth moving properly! She even took the time to teach me, and go to his school to meet with his teachers and teach them certain techniques to help him during therapy sessions. She suggested a neurologist, which is where we found out he has apraxia. ( Individuals with AOS have difficulty connecting speech messages from the brain to the mouth.[2] AOS is a loss of prior speech ability resulting from a stroke, brain injury, or progressive illness.Developmental verbal dyspraxia (DVD), also known as childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) and developmental apraxia of speech (DAS);[3][4] is an inability to utilize motor planning to perform movements necessary for speech during a childs language learning process. Although the causes differ between AOS and DVD, the main characteristics and treatments are similar.) Lots to absorb, huh? yes, we were on a truly new road to healing. But, like I said, I owe a lot to Jill, she truly helped me and Chriffy. I will never forget her and the time she spent with us. xo
